Nestled in the heart of downtown Toledo, OH is the Imagination Station.
On Friday, we began our journey back towards West Michigan. Thanks to heavy traffic on I-75 between Knoxville, TN and Lexington, KY we missed our targeted stops, and turned it into more of a driving day, making it all the way to Troy, OH. A note about Troy, we ended up at the Fairfield Inn right off of the highway, as they were $40 per night cheaper than the Holiday Inn Express across the way. I am so glad that we did, as the facility is great, and the staff are beyond wonderful. Everyone is incredibly friendly, and go out of their way to help! If you find yourself spending the night in Troy, OH give them a try, you won't be disappointed.
We spent a rainy Thursday in Gatlinburg, TN, where we toured the pricey, but excellent Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies. My favorite part was the shark exhibit. The have a moving walk way that carries you through a glass tunnel under the shark tank, it's amazing to see them right over your head! Thanks to the weather, we did our best to find things to do indoors. After lunch, our next stop was Cooter's, for our resident Dukes of Hazzard fan. If you were a fan of the show, it has a worthwhile, and free collection of memorabilia, but the indoor go-karts looked a little on the lame side. If you're into go-karts, drive the three miles to Pigeon Forge, TN, they have some of the wildest tracks, I've ever laid eyes on. There is lots of shopping to be done in both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, if you are so inclined. There are things to do on every corner of both towns, so plan accordingly, for both time and money.
For those of you not familiar with the Tail of the Dragon, it's an 11 mile stretch of US-129 that straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee.
Monday, we visited Stone Mountain Park in Tucker, GA (just outside Atlanta). I had been as a child, and remembered the mountain, but had not visited the attached park. The park has more than enough to do to keep you busy for a day, we saw about half in my estimation.
On Tuesday, we visited the home of the Cabbage Patch Kids, Baby Land General Hospital. Admission is free, plan on spending two hours or so, as there is plenty to see both inside and out, and there is a very nice picnic area off the parking lot. During our time there, we got to witness the "birth" of a healthy baby girl, and "adopted" an exclusive doll of our own. The process is adorable, after my daughter chose her doll, we filled out an adoption form (while Dad paid), and met with a "doctor" to complete the process and take an oath to love our Cabbage Patch Kid forever. Both the kids and adults alike in our group had a wonderful time. www.babylandgeneralhospital.com
Day two of our trip to Georgia found us in Nashville, TN. We stopped at the Lane Motor Museum, home of one of the most eclectic collections of vehicles I have ever seen. www.lanemotormuseum.org
