1400 Miles of Towing with a Tesla Model Y
YouTube channel “The Electric RoadTrip” recently featured a video of a Tesla Model Y towing a Casita 17 camper for 1400 miles from Colorado to Idaho. What makes this journey most interesting is that for large chunks of the trip, he was not near any Tesla Superchargers. Lots of charging took place on various other networks including Chargepoint, and in many cases filling up the Model Y at campgrounds along the way. The Tesla Model Y is rated for 3500 pounds towing capacity, and the model of trailer shown is somewhere between 2500-3000 pounds. At one point in the journey, the combination of steep grades, headwinds, poor planning, and driving too fast resulted in needing to unhook the trailer. Once unfettered, he drove just the Y to the next destination so that it could charge long enough to go back for the camper. Interestingly, the camper featured in the video is one that I have looked into in the past, as it’s one of the few lightweight models that can be ordered as a bunkhouse. Overall, it’s an interesting video, and we look forward to seeing more from this channel. Enjoy!
