My Family Car @ NAIAS 2013
Some random thoughts from the show floor:
- The VW CrossBlue concept: The CrossBlue is much better looking in person, what seems bland in photos has a presence in person that is just right. Not too big, not too small, and a stance and form that are spot on. Sidenote, VW did not have a Routan on their show stand.
- Tesla Model X: This was my first time seeing the Model X in the metal, and it was worth the wait. It is just as impressive as the Model S it is based on, but looks smaller over all. I love the "falcon-wing" doors! Not sure how they would do covered in snow, afraid you might end up with a seat full of the white stuff. Access to the back seat looks great though, speaking of the back seat, it appears much roomier in person than in photos.
- Ford Transit Family: I was very excited to lay eyes on both the full size Transit, and the short and long wheel base Transit Connect Wagons. They look great, and I am eager to take them out for a spin. Sadly, and despite several Transit Connect Passenger models, I didn't see a full-size Transit Passenger model, only cargo models.
- Fiat 500L: Fingers crossed that we get to see the rumored 500XL here in the US, as the five-seat 500L is plenty charming, it would be even more so with the addition of 2 more seats!
- Acura MDX Prototype: Looks to be more of the same from Acura, though that is not a complaint, as the current and previous MDXs have earned their reputations as solid entry-luxury family haulers.
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class refresh: With everyone else having abandoned the rear-facing third row, it was a real treat to see the updated E-Class wagon had one installed at the show!
- NAIAS in general: The show has definitely returned to its pre-bailout size, and glitz, but at the same time felt more humble and realistic. Also, it was great to see the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon, with so many announcements last week, it was like running into an old friend! There was plenty to do besides sitting in cars, General Motors especially providing activities to engage the younger crowd. Overall a terrific show!! Please take a moment to peruse the gallery below of some of our shots from the show, in addition to some pictures from the NAIAS official website. Safe Travels if you decide to go! Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $12 per adult, $6 for children over 7 years, 6 and under are free with an adult.
