2021 Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt EUV Teased!
Chevrolet has released a teaser video and two still images of the upcoming Bolt EUV, and refreshed Bolt EVs. The Bolt EUV will be the first Chevrolet product to receive Cadillac’s semi-autonomous “SuperCruise” system. It is exprected to ride on a stretched version of the Chevrolet Bolt platform. I love my 2019 Bolt EV, but I do have some concerns about these two upcoming vehicles. The rumors so far, all point to them both using the same battery and charging hardware as the 2020 cars. In the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV that means an EPA range rating of 259 miles, and a maximum charging speed of 50 kW. While the ranges is likely adequate for most drivers (I do quite will with an EPA rating of 238 miles), it is the charging speed that concerns me.
While DC fast charging makes electric road trips possible, 50kW charging speed makes for a much longer stop. I think they should aim for a 100 kW DC fast charging maximum speed. And for Heaven’s sake Chevrolet, make DC fast charging standard, not an option as it is currently! Even if that means raising the price of all Bolts and Bolt EUVs the $750 you charge for the option. There is no excuse for an EV coming out in 2021 to have an optional DC fast charger. It is a necessary component! Thank you for putting up with my rant, please enjoy the teasers below.
“DETROIT – Chevrolet offered a sneak peek of its upcoming refreshed Bolt EV and new Bolt EUV during the virtual GM Fleet Solutions Summit. The Bolt EUV will be the first Chevrolet vehicle to feature Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology for the highway. Both vehicles will go into production in summer 2021.”
