EV's on Route 66 - Ambler's Texaco Gas Station - Dwight, IL

On a recent trip from St. Louis, MO, we decided to wander off the highway and spend a little quality time along the gem that is Historic Route 66. The “Mother Road” is one of my favorite things in history. That Route 66 can be visited and experienced just the same (more or less) as it was 50-100 years ago, makes it even better. There are many old gas stations along Route 66, some still in business, but mostly shuddered and rotting away, or as in this case, restored to their former glory, and serving as points of interest, and historic landmarks. The Ambler/Becker Texaco Station is period restored to look as it would have in the 1940s, and functions as the Dwight, IL visitor’s center/one of their many local attractions. The reason that I highlight it here, is that we were delighted to find a Level 2 charging station at the old gas station. So, if you are traveling through Dwight, IL and are a member of the Chargepoint charging network, grab one of the 2 available plugs, and top off while enjoying a trip back through time! Route 66 in Illinois is especially well marked, and full of treasures for the modern mother-roader to delight in. On a side note, I would love to see someone buy up a bunch of the old rotting-away stations all along “America’s Mainstreet” and turn them into beautifully restored places to charge an EV, learn a little history, and perhaps use a restroom and grab a snack.
