ICON VW Thing EV
What you see here is the 1974 VW Thing Derelict EV by ICON. ICON gained notoriety by restomodding Toyota FJs and first generation Ford Broncos. Their attention to detail is exquisite, and shows in all of the vehicles they have breathed life into. A few years ago they began the derelict line, which brings up to date performance to original patina vehicles. This vehicle is an extension of that line, incredible performance and original paint, a thoughtful coming together of new and old. Be sure to check out the custom all-in-one digital gauge, and how seamlessly it blends in with the overall aesthetic of the build. Like all works of art, beauty has a price, in this case, $120,000. I’m a sucker for a compelling EV conversion, and in this case, if I could, I probably would. EV West offers a conversion kit for old VWs, maybe if I find a good deal on an old Thing I could build my own…

Did you ever see the pure electric VW Thing we built? It is an ICON Derelict, or shall we say, Der-electric.
With an 80-100 mile range, 38kWh Lithium LiFePO4 Enerdel batteries, and an AMR 150KW / 210HP / 280 Torque motor managed by a Rinehart water-cooled controller, this Thing is good to go! For charging, it is equipped with an Orion dual-BMS with 3kw on-board charging system and a built-in J1772 charge port (with Level 1 & 2 home or public charging along with a DC/DC converter for charging the 12V system), it is set up with the best components for reliable use and maintenance. Additionally, we upgraded the IRS to a Pro-Street LSD with a 437 ring & pinion, new radial tires, custom rims, fresh leather upholstery, restored removable hard top with improved glass windows, new weather stripping, adjustable spring plates, HD front sway bar and front disc brakes along with LED lighting. The paint is original and it is a great little Thing!
