Sebring-Vanguard Citicar in Grand Rapids
I’d like to start this article with a special thanks to the team at GR Auto Gallery, for letting me check out this wonderful piece of EV history! The Citicar was produced in Sebring, Florida from 1974-77. Later the Sebring-Vanguard Company was sold to Commuter Vehicles, Inc. who sold the wedge-shaped EV again as the Comuta-Car, from 1979-82. Total production for both runs is just over 4400 vehicles, including a Comuta-Van mail variant. While no version of the Citicar could be considered beautiful, the 1974-77 models feature slimmer, better-integrated bumpers than the safety-protrusions that adorn the later models. GR Auto Gallery’s example is finished in light blue with a white vinyl top and white interior. The side windows are actually side-curtains that lift out quite easily for open-air cruising. With a top-speed of 38mph and a range of around 40 miles, you won’t be going very far, or very fast, but you will be doing it in style! This is such a neat little car, I wish that I had extra space in my garage for it! I’m including pictures that I took, as well as pics and videos from the dealer, enjoy!
From the GR Auto Gallery Website:
“The brainchild of Bob Beaumont, the Citicar was a radical new way of looking at transportation. Designed for short trips within the city, the Citicar was more of minimal approach. The car was a radical departure from the large cars of it's era. Hard to miss with its wedge profile, it had a very futuristic look about it. The Citicar had a top speed of 38mph and a total range of around 40 miles. The frame of the car is made of lightweight aluminum. The body of the car is comprised of riveted together ABS plastic panels. The interior of the car features seats, carpet, and removable windows. The Citicar had the largest production ever of American electric cars with more than 2100 produced, until the Tesla Model S finally surpassed it.
The GR Auto Gallery is pleased to offer This 1974 Sebring Citicar for sale. The ABS body is finished in light blue with a white top and holds a great shine to it. The interior of the car has seating for two and has nice carpet on the floor. The batteries hold a charge and the car zips right along. The Citicar is a blast to drive, and gets looks everywhere it goes. Own this great example of electric vehicle history.”
